Encanto 2021 – STORYLINE

Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Encanto 2021 – PLOT

Forced by an armed conflict to flee her home, a young Alma Madrigal loses her husband Pedro but saves her triplet infant children: Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. By a “miracle”, her candle attains magical qualities, blasts away their pursuers, and creates a sentient house, the “Casita”, for the Madrigals to live in, along with a magical hidden town sheltered by tall surrounding mountains: an “encanto”. Fifty years later, the candle continues to burn and the town thrives under its protection. The candle’s magic gifts superhuman abilities to each Madrigal child, which they use to help the villagers. However, Bruno is vilified for his gift of precognition and he disappears 10 years before the main events of the film. Meanwhile, Mirabel, Julieta’s youngest daughter, is treated differently for mysteriously not having received a gift.

Pepa’s youngest son Antonio is gifted the ability to speak to animals, and the family poses for a picture but neglects Mirabel. Mirabel suddenly sees cracks in the Casita and a vision of the candle’s flame going out, but her warnings go unheeded when the Casita appears undamaged to the others. Mirabel resolves to save the miracle’s magic. The next day, Mirabel talks to her super-strong older sister Luisa, who suggests that Bruno’s room, which is located in a forbidden tower in the Casita, may hold some clues to the phenomenon. There, Mirabel discovers a cave and recovers pieces of a slab of opaque emerald glass which form an image showing her causing the Casita to fall apart. After Mirabel narrowly escapes the cave, Luisa discovers that her gift is starting to weaken.

Later in the evening, Mirabel’s oldest sister Isabela, who can make flowers grow at will, is scheduled to become engaged to neighbor Mariano Guzman. Mirabel’s oldest cousin Dolores, who possesses superhuman hearing, blurts out that she overheard Mirabel talking with her father about Bruno’s vision. The Casita once again begins to crack, causing everyone’s powers to go haywire, ruining the night and Mariano’s proposal. As everyone flees the chaos, Mirabel follows a group of rats and discovers a secret passage behind a portrait where she encounters a hidden Bruno. He realized that his vision of Mirabel could have put her at odds with the family, so he broke the vision and disappeared to protect her, while remaining nearby within the walls of the house because he still loves them. At Mirabel’s urging, Bruno reluctantly creates another vision, which shows the Casita’s inevitable destruction and an image of Mirabel embracing a young woman, whom they identify as Isabela.

Mirabel goes to apologize to Isabela and accidentally provokes a cathartic confession: Isabela does not want to marry Mariano and is in fact burdened by her image of perfection. Mirabel helps Isabela blossom into her true, imperfect self, and the sisters embrace. This seems to strengthen the candle and heals the Casita’s cracks. However, Alma spots Isabela growing whatever she wants with Mirabel from afar and accuses the latter of causing the family’s misfortunes out of spite for not having a gift. Mirabel confronts Alma, arguing that it is she who is at fault for the immense pressure she imposes on the family. Their argument suddenly creates a huge fissure that destroys the Casita. The candle dies in Mirabel’s hands, despite her efforts to save it, leaving all the Madrigals powerless.

Alma later finds a tearful Mirabel back at the river where Pedro died, and finally takes responsibility for what happened and forgetting that their real gift was not their powers, but the family itself. At last, Mirabel begins to understand her grandmother, and tells her that despite her flaws, Alma is the one who brought the family together in the first place, and the two reconcile. With Bruno in tow, they reunite with the Madrigals and the townspeople to rebuild the Casita. When finished, the Madrigals give Mirabel a handmade doorknob with her initial on. She installs it on the front door and the Casita springs back to life, restoring the magic of the house alongside all the family’s gifts. The Madrigals then pose for another family picture, this time with Mirabel and Bruno included.

In a magical area of Columbia surrounded by mountains; exists a magical town watched over by the Madrigal family. The family lives in a magical home that is the center point for the community and is loved by the community.

In the new Disney film “Encanto”; audiences are told the story of how the family patriarch founded the community with a magical candle and how upon reaching a certain age; all members of her family receive a “gift” from the magical house which gives them an ability to help the community. From being able to heal with cooking to talking to the animals and super strength; the family Madrigal is the beloved pillar of the community.

To every rule there is an exception and young Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz); is the only member of her family not to receive a gift of powers. As such she is seen as a pariah from the family and believes she is more tolerated than loved especially compared to her siblings who are endowed with amazing abilities.

Things change when a new member of the family goes through the gifting ceremony; the first one since Mirabel was denied, and receives an amazing gift and basks in the love of the town and family. Mirabel has a vision of the house cracking and falling into ruin. She tries to warn her family but they see the house in its usual pristine condition and blame Mirabel for being jealous for not having a gift and wanting to take attention away from those who do.

Mirabel believes in what she saw and learns that members of her family may know more than they admit and that they hold the key to saving the day. This leads to a quest to find the absent Uncle Bruno (John Leguizamo); who has been absent as many believe his gift of prophecy only leads to bad things coming to fruition and has gone into hiding as a result.

Mirabel is soon forced to look deep inside herself and find her strength to overcome her own insecurities and save her family and community.

The film has great animation and is awash in color as it brings the magical community to life. The music is lively and is what you would expect from Lin- Manuel Miranda as it brings joy and energy to the film that is in keeping with the Disney tradition of amazing music in their animated films.

The biggest issue that I had with the film is that while fun and entertaining; the story never took the next step forward and at times dragged. This is not to say that “Encanto” is a bad film as it is lively, colorful, and fun; however it does not reach the heights of Disney classics like “Frozen” “Moana” and other classics. Think of it this way; “Lilo & Stitch” is a fine animated film but few would hold it in the same regard as “The Lion King”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “The Little Mermaid”.

In the end “Encanto” offers a fun experience for the family and fans to enjoy and shows how even when they do not hit the top of the mountain; Disney is still the Gold Standard in animation.
